By the time most of us had awakened Wednesday morning, Joey Cheek had started another international incident.
President Bush had already been called, and the White House was considering a response. Cheek was on the front page of The Washington Post.
Again.
As Bush was being briefed, he was preparing to make a trip halfway around the world to a place the former speedskater from Greensboro was no longer welcome.
Beijing, China.
Sometime Tuesday, in the hours leading to his own visit to the Olympic Games, officials of the Chinese government met with their advisers and deemed Cheek to be an undesirable, or something of the sort

But he has his eyes on a bigger prize. Peace in Darfur, Sudan.
At the 2006 Turin Olympics, Cheek won the gold medal in the 500-meter speedskating event. When he met the media, he was different from the other athletes. Instead of gushing about his performance ('I skate around in skates and tights, it's not that big a deal'), Cheek used his 15 minutes of fame to talk about death in the desert. Specifically, the genocide in Darfur, where an estimated 400,000 people have died. He donated his award money ($25,000 for his gold medal, $15,000 for his silver) to Darfur refugees through 'Right To Play,' a humanitarian group working in Africa

Reports had circulated that Sundin was to make a decision on Aug. 1. However, that date passed without a word from the Sundin camp.
It has been widely speculated Sundin will play this season, but it is just a matter of where. However, Barry says Sundin is still considering hanging up his skates for good.
The longer it takes, who knows? Barry told TSN. He is deciding whether it's time to retire or not

'I'm going to Russia to be on television in a program they're doing called Skating With the Stars,' he said.
'I'll be in Moscow for four months and I'm taking my family, my wife (Natasha) and my three children.
'For the children it'll be a challenge because they'll go to school there and study Russian.'
For the boxer-turned-skater it's also something of a challenge.
'There is a lot of pain in this,' he said, rubbing his buttocks which had taken the brunt of a fall during practice.
'I do ask myself sometimes 'why do I do it?' but learning to skate is a challenge.
'Whatever I do, I give it 100 per cent.'
He said he had only skated a little when growing up in Russia and now he found it 'interesting' learning to dance on ice

He's in Sweden, enjoying time in a cabin by a lake, going boating and taking the kids tubing behind the boat. Hedberg comes back to Atlanta Aug. 13, but he's already getting ready for the season. 'Hopefully, I can get a few hours in [on the ice] this week and then get on the ice a couple of times next week,' Hedberg said.
-New Thrashers player Marty Reasoner was a pioneer of sorts last season. Reasoner used high tech skates with battery-powered heaters to warm the blades to the ideal temperature (about 41 degrees Fahrenheit) to decrease starting and gliding resistance. The equipment, made by Thermablade, has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $299.99. Reasoner is quoted in a company news release saying the skates 'gave me a real advantage.'

Eddie Estey has found the perfect way to beat the summertime heat. The Beverly resident and St. John's Prep standout is staying cool at the 34th annual Hockey Night in Boston Summer Showcase.
'It's good competition,' said Estey. 'It's a great chance to be seen by college, prep schools or junior teams if you want to do something after high school.'
Over 400 of the nation's top scholastic hockey stars from 30 states have descended on the Bay State for this annual tournament, which is currently being held at the Valley Forum in Haverhill

As for the 'positives' Martin wished were stressed more in the article, he elaborated: 'We re trying to make people realize and believe they can live their dreams no matter what those dreams are, they can make it happen with hard work. Hard work makes up for lack of money. People bonding together as a group can achieve insurmountable projects.'For Martin, that 'insurmountable project' has been constructing Skatopia (with the help of skaters that use the park) which has been dubbed '88 Acres of Anarchy' and contains both concrete and wooden skating bowls. The park is featured on a level of Tony Hawk s Underground Two skating video game, MTV has made an appearance via Bam Margera and a documentary is being made about the place. The next addition to Skatopia and Martin s vision is an amphitheater for concerts with the group Slayer on the top of his list to book to play the new venue. As for Skatopia s reputation put on view for a wide audience to 'read all about it' this month, Martin says: 'There are positives and negatives. People have different view points, that s what makes America great and we all still manage to function together. There s always people that take things to the next level (like some who attended the Bowl Bash) but we weed those out. We never let the bad apples ruin the cider

Yesterday we saw in action the Large and Medium models of the Segway-killer Toyota Winglet. Here you have the Type S, which stands for small but, according to Toyota, could also mean Sports. Looking at the video, it makes sense: basically, this thing seems to allow for faster, more aggressive driving, achieving a behaviour similar to inline skates. Someone should boost their engines speed as soon as they arrive. [Toyota]
